Police seize prohibited items in Meyerton High School search after learner attack
A police operation uncovered potentially dangerous items at a Midvaal school, with further searches possible as security is tightened ahead of the examination period.
Police and Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens recovered scissors, a sharp object, lighters, a vape and a cylindrical smoking-related item during a search at Meyerton High School yesterday (August 11), following a serious attack on a Grade 11 learner the previous week.
The learner allegedly suffered a fractured clavicle after being attacked by a group of learners and required surgery. He has been booked off from school for the week, reports Vaalweekblad.
The search was conducted by police and Crime Prevention Wardens after school principal Lucia Moabi approached the Meyerton station commander for assistance following the attack.
The operation began with a parade at Riverstone Mall at about 08:00 before officers and wardens proceeded to the school. The wardens helped secure the perimeter while police searched classrooms and other areas of the school.
No arrests were made during the operation.
Meyerton police spokesperson Constable Nompumelelo Zazini said the search followed the attack reported at the school the previous week.
“The unfortunate part is because of this weather a lot of learners who were identified as part of the incident were not present,” said Zazini.
She said the operation would not be the last, indicating that police would return to the school.
Moabi said she was grateful for the police intervention and welcomed the search.
She said the attack involved learners in grades 10 and 11 and occurred last Tuesday (August 4).
The school had invited the learners allegedly involved and their parents to a meeting that same evening to discuss the incident, but they did not attend.
Moabi said the school’s disciplinary procedures require parents to accompany learners when they are called to the school over serious disciplinary matters.
She said the school hoped police would conduct another search later in the year, before examinations begin.
The search forms part of ongoing efforts by the school and police to address safety and disciplinary concerns at the school.
