MEYERTON – Police and Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens conducted a search at Meyerton High School on Tuesday, August 11, following a serious assault involving learners at the school last week.

The operation began with a parade at Riverstone Mall at about 08:00 before officers and wardens proceeded to the school.

The Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, who assist with community-based law enforcement in the province, helped secure the perimeter while the search was conducted.

Several items were recovered during the operation, including scissors, a sharp object, lighters, a vape and a cylindrical smoking-related item.

No arrests were made during the search.

Meyerton police spokesperson Constable Nompumelelo Zazini said the search followed an incident at the school the previous week in which a learner was attacked.

“The unfortunate part is because of this weather a lot of learners who were identified as part of the incident were not present,” Zazini said.

She added that the search would not be the last, saying police would return to the school.

Meyerton High School principal Lucia Moabi said she had approached the Meyerton station commander and requested that police conduct a search at the school.

“I am grateful for them to be here to come and assist,” Moabi said.

She said the school had dealt with a serious incident the previous Tuesday in which a group of learners allegedly attacked a Grade 11 learner.

According to Moabi, the learner suffered a fractured clavicle and required surgery. He has been booked off from school for the week.

The attack left a Grade 11 learner with a fractured clavicle requiring surgery.

The learners allegedly involved were in Grades 10 and 11, she said.

The school had invited the learners and their parents to a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the incident, but they did not attend.

Moabi said the school’s disciplinary procedures require parents to accompany learners when they are called to the school regarding serious disciplinary matters.

She said the school welcomed the police search and hoped another operation could be conducted later in the year, before examinations begin.

The search comes as the school and police continue efforts to address safety and disciplinary concerns at the school.
