A can collector was shocked to discover a baby’s remains at an illegal dumping site in Bophelong Ext 15, outside Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng, reports the Sedibeng Ster.

The woman was collecting tins at an illegal dumping site early yesterday morning (August 31) when she began looking for an empty plastic bag to carry her cans.

She picked up a bag that appeared clean, but noticed it was unusually heavy.

“When I opened the plastic bag to see what was inside, I found another Checkers bag which was fastened and heavy. I opened it too, and to my surprise, there was a baby inside,” she said.

The discovery shocked the woman, so she ran from the site and called nearby residents for help.

Word quickly spread, with dozens of residents gathering at the dumping site before police arrived.

Vanderbijlpark detectives attended the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

Vanderbijlpark police spokesperson Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu confirmed that a case of concealment of birth has been opened.

Police have not yet provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the discovery or the identity of the mother.
