Police investigate after 12-year-old drowns at Muldersdrift dam
Safety warnings have been issued for families to ensure constant supervision and life-jacket safety around unpatrolled water.
A swimming outing with friends ended in tragedy after a 12-year-old boy drowned at a dam in Muldersdrift on the Westrand, reports Roodepoort Record.
Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services recovered the boy’s body at the scene on Sunday ( October 18), after being dispatched to the dam at about 14:00.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Raymond Sambo said the boy had reportedly been swimming with friends when he got into difficulty and drowned.
The body was handed over to Muldersdrift police, who will open an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Sambo urged the public to take precautions when swimming in dams, rivers and other open-water areas, particularly where there are no designated swimming facilities or lifeguards.
He advised people entering open water to wear life jackets and stressed the importance of educating children about the dangers of swimming in unmonitored areas.
Parents and caregivers were also urged to maintain constant supervision of young children near open water to help prevent similar tragedies.
