Estcourt SPAR and TOPS to close after more than 35 years
The closure of a long-standing retailer and the adjacent bottle store in a KZN town has raised concerns about job losses, with the Uthukela District Municipality saying no buyer has come forward to take over the stores.
Estcourt residents face losing a familiar shopping destination after SPAR and TOPS confirmed they would close after more than 35 years in the town, reports Northern Natal News.
The closure has raised concerns about the future of employees and their families, as well as the possible impact on nearby businesses that rely on customers visiting the store.
Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality’s Office of the Mayor issued a statement yesterday (October 22) expressing concern about the closure and its potential economic consequences.
No buyer to take over
According to the municipality, SPAR management met last week with top municipal officials to discuss the planned closure.
The municipality said it was informed that the closure had been confirmed because no buyers or prospective new operators were interested in taking over the business.
SPAR management declined to comment.
The specific reasons behind the decision to close the Estcourt store have therefore not been confirmed.
Retailers face a challenging market
The closure comes amid wider pressure on South Africa’s grocery retail sector, with consumers facing higher living costs and retailers working to protect profitability in a competitive market.
SPAR Group has acknowledged challenges affecting its business, including subdued consumer spending, higher fuel and utility costs, elevated interest rates and pressure on earnings in Southern Africa.
In June, chief executive Reeza Isaacs also acknowledged that the group had allowed its costs to grow faster than revenue and had not given retailer profitability sufficient priority.
The group has also been working to address operational and profitability challenges in KZN.
In September, SPAR warned investors that its 2026 financial performance was expected to be weaker than in 2025, with pressure continuing in its grocery and liquor businesses.
However, SPAR has not confirmed whether these wider pressures contributed to the decision to close the Estcourt SPAR and TOPS.
Municipality concerned about jobs
The municipality said the closure could affect more than the store’s employees, with neighbouring businesses also potentially losing customers.
SPAR and TOPS have helped shape Estcourt’s commercial landscape for more than three decades, serving generations of residents and supporting the local economy.
The municipality reiterated its commitment to engaging with relevant stakeholders, supporting local economic development and creating an environment in which businesses can grow and employment opportunities can be protected.
It also emphasised the need for continued collaboration between government, businesses and other stakeholders to strengthen Estcourt’s economic future.
