No scheduled flights to Cape Town from Wonderboom airport yet
Initial expectations were that flights would be available to Cape Town this month.
There has been no flights to Cape Town from Wonderboom airport in the north of Pretoria yet, despite the airport saying that it was ready to take on such flights, Rekord North reports.
“We (management) at the airport stand ready to except (sic) any commercial flights,” said airport manager Waheed Mohamed.
“However, we cannot speak on behalf of the airlines.”
Flights between Pretoria and Cape Town were suspended in May, pending infrastructure upgrades recommended by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
These upgrades were successfully completed in June.
At the time, airport management announced that scheduled flights were expected in September.
Mohamed said improvements included the upgrade of the roads inside the airport and the perimeter fence.
“Systems were streamlined to ensure safe and legal entry into the airport premises to improve the safety and security of staff, tenants and passengers,” Mohamed said.
The airport was “ready to take off” as Mohamed said.
“The airport is now in a position to engage and invite operators to the airport, providing choice and value for customers,” he said.
“We hope that this service [flights to and from Cape Town] will soon be available to the public.”
