Motorists awaiting driver’s licenses told to get temporary cards
“This will ensure motorists comply with traffic regulations,”departmental spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said.
Motorists who are still waiting for their driver’s licenses because of a strike by driving licence card account employees, should apply for temporary cards, Rekord Centurion reports.
This is according to the department of transport.
The labour dispute has been ongoing since August of this year and only recently has come to an end.
The department said it would prioritise printing outstanding driver’s licenses.
“An outstanding 90 000 driver’s licenses will be printed within the next three weeks,” departmental spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said.
In the meantime, the department said motorists must apply for temporary driving license cards.
This card is valid for six months.
“This will ensure that motorists comply with traffic regulations,” said Mnisi.
Applicants can also check the status of their cards by sending their ID number to 33214.
During the dispute, which occurred when production machines were being serviced, the contractor had to implement a contingency plan.
This was to recover lost production time.
“We are pleased that affected employees have since agreed to resume their duties,” said Mnisi.
“Since then, over 800 000 cards were printed with over 500 000 cards dispatched.”
