Elderly man killed in ‘burglary’

Police are investigating a case of murder after an elderly man was found dead outside his home in the Moorton area of Chatsworth, Durban, on Wednesday night after what is believed to have been a house robbery.

Neighbours claimed the 80-year-old man was murdered by a house robbery suspect. He was also found with his belt missing, sparking suspicions that he may have been strangled to death with it,Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Cheryl Pillay said the man’s nephew had returned home and found him lying on the floor. “He further noticed that the house had been burgled. There were no signs of any injuries on the deceased,” she said.

Police said investigations into cases of murder and house robbery were ongoing, but no arrests have been made. Residents have been urged to contact Chatsworth police if they have any information.

Earlier this month, an elderly man was killed during a housebreaking in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.

The man and his wife, together with their domestic worker, were brutally attacked in their home after three young men allegedly entered the premises.

It is believed the intruders tied up the elderly woman and domestic worker and left them in a room.

The husband was strangled to death in the passageway, with his mouth and neck bound with socks.

The robbers then ransacked the house, taking electrical appliances and other valuables, before fleeing.
