Hijackers arrested in Rosebank after car crash
Three suspected hijackers have been arrested after crashing into a tree in Rosebank, Johannesburg today.
Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and a hijacked white VW Jetta after the incident on Tyrwhitt Road, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported.
The tracking device of the Jetta alerted police that the vehicle, which was hijacked in Yeoville, Johannesburg on Monday, was on Jellicoe Road in Rosebank today.
Rosebank police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said the police, metro police and the Flying Squad were alerted, and police tried to stop the suspects on Tyrwhitt Avenue.
Mdletshe said the suspects, aged between 29 and 38, refused to stop and drove through the red traffic light at the intersection of Tyrwhitt and Sturdee avenues. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The suspects then tried to flee, but police caught them.
Two other vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Tucson, collided after the suspects drove through the intersection. The driver of the Hyundai Tucson was injured in the crash and was treated by paramedics on scene. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
Mdletshe said police shot one suspect in the leg. The suspect’s head was also injured in the crash. He was taken to hospital for further treatment.
Tyrwhitt and Sturdee avenues remained affected by traffic in the afternoon, while motorists were asked to find alternative routes.
