Man wrestles burglar, hands him over to police

A Durban resident wrestled an alleged housebreaker to the ground in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to Durban North police spokesperson, Lieutenant Raymond Deokaran, the incident occurred on Burnham Drive in La Lucia at about 2am, North Glen News reported.

“The resident was alerted to the intruder when he heard his girlfriend’s terrified scream from upstairs. He ran up the stairs and found the suspect in one of the rooms,” Deokaran said.

The man then confronted the housebreaker and a struggle ensued.

“He managed to wrestle the suspect to the ground and found a Samsung Galaxy tablet, which belonged to his girlfriend, in the thief’s pocket,” Deokaran added.

The suspect has been charged with burglary and will appear in court on Monday.

While Deokaran commended the man’s efforts, he asked other residents not to fight with criminals.

“Residents should contact the police or their local security company before attempting to take down criminals. In this case, the housebreaker wasn’t armed,” Deokaran said

In January, police opened an attempted robbery case after a 20-year-old woman and her family were allegedly attacked by two men in Hibberdene, KwaZulu-Natal.

The woman and her family were reportedly walking home when they were approached by two suspects armed with knives. One of the men allegedly held a knife to the woman’s ribs before grabbing her backpack and slicing it open while the second man reportedly held a knife to her face.

The woman’s mother sprang to her daughter’s defence and managed to hit one of the suspects while her uncle hit the other with a stick. The suspects then fled without taking any belongings.
