VIDEO: Two die in Witbank multiple vehicle crashes

Chaos occurred on the N4 Highway and N12 Highway in Witbank, Mpumalanga, this morning, after more than 65 vehicles crashed due to heavy mist, killing two people.

According to ER24, there were at least three separate collisions involving multiple cars, taxis and trucks spread out across the highway this morning.

“Paramedics currently describe the overall scene as chaotic,” said spokesperson Russel Meiring. “It is believed heavy mist in the area contributed to the cause of the collisions.”

Mist embraced the highways around eMalahleni early this morning. The chaos started after one by one cars, bakkies and heavy vehicles crashed into one another on the N12 and the N4, Witbank News reported.

On the N4, en route to Middelburg, about 65 vehicles had piled up metres away from the toll plaza.

Former Emalahleni Executive Mayor Linah Malatjie was also involved in one of the crashes.

“I can’t believe this is happening. I am so grateful to God that no-one around me is seriously injured,” Malatjie said.

The highway is now open again and the big clean-up has started. Drivers are urged to drive with caution.
