Community unites for toddler’s heart surgery

Three-year-old Deepika Singh, who was diagnosed with “a hole in the heart”, recently underwent a successful heart surgery in Johannesburg, made possible by her community’s generous support.

Deepika was diagnosed with a heart condition called Multiple Ventricular Septal Defects, commonly known as a hole in the heart, and her family found themselves in need of a surgery they could not afford, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

Her mother Shireen Singh expressed gratitude for the generous efforts of the community, who contributed to the funds necessary for the much-needed operation.

The mother recalled the moments leading up to the surgery as a terrifying experience. “It was such a stressful time in our lives. I was terrified just like any mother would be because anything can happen during surgery. But after it was done, she responded well,” she said.

She added: “It was amazing to see so many people reach out to my Deepika. People from all walks of life came to support my baby in this trying time.”

“No matter the colour or religion, the community prayed for her recovery, and through prayer she pulled through. God has given us more time with our Deepika,” said Singh.

Deepika’s parents are now excited about what the future holds for the aspiring doctor. “Although she is only three, we can only look at her in awe. She is so brave. But we always tell her that she is a strong and powerful girl, and we will continue to empower her as she heals,” said father Naresh Singh.

The parents would like to give special thanks to DJ Caterers, the Parasanthie Temple for their generous contributions as well as the Grade 11 class of Merebank High School, who raised funds towards Deepika’s surgery. “We thank you all for giving Deepika a brighter and healthy future,” said Naresh.
