Bullets fly in fierce 30 minute gun battle

Police are searching for five armed suspects after they allegedly robbed a Savemore store, fired shots and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in Kwambonambi, KwaZulu-Natal.

It is alleged the victim, 48, was closing the store with her colleagues when they were accosted by the unknown suspects yesterday at about 18.30pm. Suddenly she heard gunshots outside the store and noticed unknown men around her, Zululand Observer reported.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the suspects took cash, cellphones and a DVD recorder before fleeing scene. Shots were fired, but no one was injured. A case of business robbery is under investigation. No arrests or recoveries has been made, added Naicker.

Last month a Markham store in the Vryheid CBD, KwaZulu-Natal, was allegedly robbed.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the suspects walked into the retail store and held the manager and two employees at gunpoint at about 10.45am.

The victims were tied up using duct tape, and the manager was told to hand over the keys to the safe. It is alleged the suspects made off with R20 862 in cash and cellphones and tablets worth of R10 000.

Zwane said no injuries were sustained during the incident. A case of business robbery was opened at Vryheid Police Station, and no arrest had been made.
