KZN man seriously burnt following explosion
An unidentified man sustained serious burns to his arm and neck after a fire broke out in a Gus Brown Road residence in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday.
Amanzimtoti Fire Department divisional commander Anton Swardling said the man, who works for a pest-control company, was spraying chemicals in the house’s roof at about 9am when an explosion took place, South Coast Sun reported.
“They thought the electricity had been cut off, which wasn’t, and the flammable chemicals he was using ignited when it came into contact with the electricity. The electricity should have been isolated,” he said.
The house’s geyser also exploded, and the house sustained water damage along with fire damage to the ceiling, where the fire had to be contained.
The injured man was treated on scene by ER24 paramedics. He was transported to hospital.
In May, one person was injured after apparently trying to cook food using a gas cylinder blew up in flames in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal.
Paul Herbst from IPSS Medical Rescue said two people were trying to cook food in the bathroom area using a gas cylinder after loadshedding was implemented.
“The flames set alight the room. The responded to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze,” added Herbst.
