Elderly woman robbed at gunpoint after withdrawing cash

Three armed suspects have been arrested after they robbed a 65-year-old woman of an undisclosed amount of cash before firing shots in Krugersdorp, on the East Rand.

Krugersdorp police spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale said it is alleged that the 65-year-old victim was from the bank and she withdrew cash to pay her workers yesterday. On arrival to her home, she noticed a black golf behind her. The suspects approached her and grabbed the handbag from her.

“The victim tried to fight for the bag and one of the suspects fired a shot and they ran away. Fortunately, someone saw what was happening and followed the vehicle. While busy following the suspects, he saw police vehicle and informed them of the incident,” she added.

Mashale said when the suspects saw police, they increased the speed then police gave chase until they were cornered and arrested. One firearm with live ammunition and cash were recovered.

The suspects will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates` Court on Monday facing charges of armed robbery and attempted murder.

In a separate incident, a man was robbed at gunpoint in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal, after withdrawing an amount of R70 000 from First National Bank ATM in Galleria in February.

When he arrived at his home, he was approached by two men who pointed firearms at him and demanded he hand over the money.

The suspects also demanded the victim’s wife’s bag which contained R10 000 and a cellphone.

Amanzimtoti police communications officer Captain Charlene van der Spuy said the men then fled the scene in a blue hatchback VW Polo.
