Mpumalanga residents protest over unemployment

EMbalenhle residents in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, took to the streets and blocked main roads to the area during unemployment protests yesterday.

Residents who were on their way to work reportedly returned home after protesters blocked all the main roads to the area, Ridge Times reported.

The protesters were singing struggle songs, burning tyres and mobilised themselves to monitor all movement on the roads.

Police spokesperson Captain Magonseni Nkosi said police intervened and fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. No injuries were reported.

The residents are protesting against unemployment in the area, and they intend to submit a memorandum and CVs of the unemployed to the Govan Mbeki Municipality.

The protesters said they would also go to all the economical hubs in the area, such as Sasol, Skyhill, Graceland and other companies to voice their outrage.

In a separate incident, one person was killed and three injured when angry residents fought with police during a service delivery protest on the R36 road along Nkowankowa Township, Limpopo, in May.

Residents of Sasekani, JB and Muhlava Cross Village took to the streets after the Mopani District Municipality reneged on its promise to respond to their demands for water supply by May 6.

They barricaded the road with burning tyres, stones and various other objects from Wednesday morning in protest against the lack of clean running water in the area. The protesters said they were tired of sharing dirty water with animals.
