Elderly woman killed in Krugersdorp fire
An inquest docket has been opened after a 73-year-old woman was declared dead on scene after a fire broke out in Mindalore, Krugersdorp, Gauteng.
Krugersdorp police spokesperson Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said police officers were patrolling the area when, on Impala Road, they noticed what seemed to be a flat on fire on Monday,Krugersdorp News reported.
“The officers immediately responded to the scene, and on arrival they realised that a townhouse unit was on fire. Police gained entry to the burning building and managed to rescue a man and the son of the woman who succumbed in the fire,” she added.
Mashale said paramedics and the Mogale City Emergency Services responded to the scene. After the fire was extinguished, the body of an elderly woman was recovered inside the house, and she was declared dead by paramedics on the scene.
Community Policing Forum and members of the public expressed their sincere condolences to the family of the victim.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile a fire broke out at Pepperico Fish and Chips on Scott Street, in KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday morning, Newcastle Advertiser reported.
An ER24 private ambulance was patrolling the area when paramedics noticed the smoke at about 08.30am. They immediately advised the occupants of the shop to evacuate the building and notified the fire and traffic departments to contain the scene.
The fire escalated rapidly thereafter, but firefighters managed to contain it. No injuries were sustained, and the extent of the damage and exact cause of the fire are unknown at this stage. Investigations are under way.
