Krugersdorp man collapses, dies on pavement

An inquest docket has been opened after an unidentified man collapsed and died on the pavement of Bell Street in Noordheuwel, Krugersdorp, on the West Rand, on Tuesday.

Krugersdorp police spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale said the victim was apparently walking with his friends when he started vomiting. He then collapsed on the pavement. Paramedics were called, and the victim was certified dead on the scene.

A witness sitting on the corner of Bell Street and Shannon Road said two men who were collecting rubbish for recycling were crossing Bell Street when one suddenly collapsed at the intersection and started coughing up thick blood, Krugersdorp News reported.

“He got up, and after the pair had crossed the street, he stumbled and fell in the sidewalk garden at the hospital,” said the witness.

The cause of death remains unknown. Police investigations are ongoing.

Last month, an unidentified woman allegedly collapsed and died at the El Ridge Shopping Centre in Boksburg, on the East Rand.

Boksburg North police communication officer Lieutenant Juanita Coetzer said the deceased was allegedly waiting for the shop, where she works, to open when she collapsed and died at about 9am.

An anonymous resident expressed her disgust at the manner in which the body of the deceased was left lying on a pavement for a long time, saying the human body deserves dignity and respect.

“The medical personnel were called, but she was declared dead on scene,” said Coetzer.

The cause of her collapse was unknown.
