Summer vs winter: Find the perfect time for a bush escape
Whether you’re dreaming of baby animals and lush landscapes or cooler weather and excellent game viewing, there’s a safari season for everyone.
Fancy going on safari in KZN? Before you book, it’s worth considering what kind of experience you’re after. Here’s how to choose the best time for your bush adventure.
Four reasons why summer (November to March) is a stunner:
- Longer days
With the sun rising early and setting late, summer offers more daylight hours to explore the bush. Morning game drives start with the call of fish eagles echoing through the valley, while afternoon drives often linger into spectacular sunsets that paint the sky in vivid pinks and golds. This time of year is a photographer’s dream as the dramatic lighting and vibrant colours set the perfect backdrop for iconic imagery.
- Lush greenery
After the first rains, the bushveld transforms into a green wonderland with wildflowers in bloom. The dense vegetation is the perfect backdrop if you love the green season. It’s also calving season, so you’re likely to spot newborn antelope and warthog piglets finding their feet.
- Birdwatcher’s paradise
If birding is your passion, summer is unbeatable. KwaZulu-Natal welcomes hundreds of migratory species from Europe, Asia, and North Africa, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts. There are great sightings of resident cuckoos – red-chested, black, Diederik, Klaas’s, African emerald, Levaillant’s and jacobin among them – with their unique calls synonymous with African summer. Even if you’re not a dedicated birder, the chorus of calls adds a magical soundtrack to every drive and walk.
- Refreshing rain
While summer rains are frequent, they’re usually brief with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that cool the air and breathe life into the land. There’s something deeply moving about watching a storm roll across the valley from the comfort of your lodge deck, followed by the scent of rain on the earth and the sight of wildlife moving through wet grass.
Four reasons why winter (May to August) is wonderful
- Cooler temperatures
While summer can be warm and humid, winter in KwaZulu-Natal is dry, mild, and comfortable. Daytime temperatures average around 23°C, which is ideal for exploring on foot or taking long, unhurried game drives. Early mornings and evenings are cooler, so you can wrap up in a blanket, sip a hot drink, and watch the mist lift from the valley. At night, there is a warm fire in the common area before you retreat to the warmth of your room, where soft bedding offers the perfect balance of comfort and wilderness.
- Clear blue skies
Winter is known for its crisp, blue-sky days. The air is clear, the light softer, and the landscape glows under the gentle warmth of the sun. This is a great time for photographers to capture Africa’s iconic golden tones, with elephants outlined against the pale blue sky or rhinos bathed in late-afternoon light.
- Easier wildlife viewing
As the bush dries out and grasses recede, wildlife becomes easier to spot. Animals gather around permanent water sources, creating fantastic opportunities to observe elephants, giraffes, zebras, and predators in action. Because the vegetation is thinner, guides can track animals more effectively, which is always an exciting experience.
- Aloe sightings
The vast majority of aloes flower in winter, making this the perfect time to witness their striking beauty and discover more about these iconic succulents, considered a keystone species in many southern African ecosystems. Birds, bees, butterflies, and many other interesting insects are attracted to these glorious plants.
