Since its launch in South Africa three years ago, the Omoda C5 has quickly established itself as one of the stronger performers in the compact crossover segment, with 16 948 units of the Chery sub-brand’s compact crossover sold locally up to June, bringing total sales to nearly 17 000 units.

Arguably contributing to this popularity, the Chinese automaker has, over the past 13 months, bolstered the local C5 line-up with the introduction of the C5 X Series, which featured in CAR magazine’s 2025 SUV Shootout, the updated Street+ entry-level derivative, and more recently the C5 SHS hybrid, the latter of which was introduced to the country in April. 

As a reminder, the Omoda C5 SHS hybrid, one of the most affordable hybrid vehicles in SA, combines a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with a single electric motor; producing combined system outputs of 165kW and 295N.m of torque. The company claims the it accelerates from 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds and offers up to 1 000km of driving range, based on an average fuel consumption of 4.9 L/100km.

“The C5’s performance over the past three years reflects more than strong initial interest. It shows the value of continuing to improve a product throughout its lifecycle,” said Shannon Gahagan, national brand and marketing manager for iCAUR and Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa. “The updates introduced over the past 13 months, with the early response to the C5 SHS, show that customers are responding to a range that keeps evolving while remaining strongly positioned on value.”
