Mix up a timeless sherry cocktail from the 1800s

A refreshing blend of sherry, citrus, and a touch of sweetness, this Sherry Cobbler brings together simple ingredients for a timeless drink.

The Sherry Cobbler, with its simple yet elegant mix of sherry, citrus, and sugar, has been charming cocktail lovers since the early 19th century. Often credited with popularising the paper drinking straw, the cobbler is a delightfully refreshing, low-alcohol drink that is perfect for warm, sunny afternoons. It first gained international attention in Charles Dickens’ novel The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit, where it’s praised as a ‘wonderful invention’.

Ingredients

  • 15 ml simple syrup
  • 1/2 orange wheel
  • 1 lemon wheel
  • 100 ml amontillado sherry
  • Garnish: seasonal berries, additional orange wheel

Method

  1. In a cocktail shaker, combine the simple syrup, orange, and lemon wheels. Lightly muddle the citrus with a muddler to release the fresh flavors and aromas.
  2. Add the sherry to the shaker, then cover and shake well to blend the ingredients.
  3. Strain the mixture into a tall glass filled with crushed ice. To serve, garnish with a few seasonal berries and an additional orange wheel.
