If your green thumb skills are not yet fully fledged or you just don’t have the energy or time for high-maintenance veggies and herbs that give you a once-off harvest – you are the perfect candidate for cut-and-come-again crops.
Instead of pulling out the entire plant like a carrot or radish, you can simple cut what you need from these plants and they will grow back to give you multiple pickings. Think less waste, more fresh harvests, and a longer growing seasos.
Some of these include:
- Lettuce: Cos, Crisp and Fancy Mix varieties keep producing if you harvest the outer leaves first.
- Spinach: Baby Spinach and Ford Hook will regrow quickly after light harvesting.
- Rocket & Mustard: Regular picking encourages more tender, flavourful leaves.
- Tatsoi & Packchoi: Harvest a few leaves at a time, or cut the whole plant and let it re-sprout.
- Celery & Parsley: Snip stems from the outside while leaving the center intact for continued growth.
Remember these four tips to harvest for continuous growth:
- Use clean, sharp scissors or garden shears.
- Pick the outer leaves first, leaving the center intact.
- Harvest little and often – don’t remove more than one-third of the plant at a time.
- Water and feed your plants regularly to keep them thriving.
