1 dead, 1 injured in Durban drive-by shooting

Police are investigating whether a Durban drive-by shooting that left one man dead is linked to recent gang-related violence in Wentworth.

Two men were shot in a drive-by shooting yesterday morning on Argyle Road in Durban. Southlands Sun reports that both victims are believed to be residents of Wentworth. One man died at the scene, while the other was rushed to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to sources who spoke to the newspaper, the men were driving towards Durban’s CBD when unknown suspects opened fire on their vehicle.

Sources said the Wentworth men were travelling along Argyle Road towards Umgeni Road when occupants of an unknown vehicle pulled up alongside them and opened fire. Their car was riddled with bullets, striking the windscreen, side mirrors and body.

Revenge suspected

“The attack is suspected to be an act of retaliation linked to recent shootings in Hime Street, Wentworth,” said a source.

While initial reports suggest a possible connection, police have not yet confirmed whether the incidents are related and said investigations are ongoing.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the vehicle was shot at multiple times, leaving both driver and passenger with multiple gunshot wounds.

“Paramedics assessed the two men believed to be in their 30s and 40s, and discovered one of them [the passenger] sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared deceased at the scene; the driver was stabilised and transferred to a nearby hospital,” said Jamieson.

Linked to earlier Wentworth shooting

On Monday, one man was shot dead in Hime Street and two others were wounded.

eThekwini district police spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhymes said: “It is alleged that on October 20, all three victims aged between 22 and 32 years old were sitting in an old building situated outside a flat on Hime Street. Two unknown men approached them and opened fire, wounding all three victims. One of the victims, aged 24, ran up the stairways of a nearby flat and collapsed on the third floor and succumbed to his injuries.

“The two surviving victims were rushed to hospital for medical attention, where one victim is known to be in critical condition.”
