2 arrested for attempted police killing in KZN
Law enforcement officers intercepted a vehicle and arrested its occupants after they fired shots at a policeman.
The swift response of police in Ntuzuma in KZN led to the arrest of two suspects a few minutes after they allegedly attempted to kill an on-duty police officer in Newlands.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the police constable was driving a state vehicle on the corner of Inanda Road and Marbleray Drive on Thursday when a white Ford Figo approached from the side.
“Two men got out of the vehicle, carrying a firearm. The officer immediately reversed, as he attempted to take cover.
“The two suspects got back into their vehicle, made a U-turn and drove against the traffic as they chased the police officer, firing shots at him. The constable returned fire and the suspects fled,” says Netshiunda.
Details of suspects’ vehicle were circulated and police officers spotted it on the corner of Mswenya and Nyala roads in Ntuzuma.
According to Netshiunda, the vehicle was intercepted and the suspects were found in possession of a firearm, which had the serial number erased. Police also found Gauteng registration plates and several bank cards in the vehicle.
The suspects, aged 20 and 30, were arrested and will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today on charges of attempted murder of a police officer and illegal possession of a firearm. – SAnews.gov.za
