2 killed after car crashes into Mpumalanga river

A woman reportedly lost control over her vehicle and crashed into the barriers poles before the car plunged into the river.

A female driver and one of her four passengers died when the car they were travelling in ended up in a river.

The incident occurred yesterday, about 10km from Bethal on the road to Standerton.

According to information received, the woman allegedly lost control of her vehicle, in a bend in the road just before the bridge, due to the wet road surface.

The car reportedly crashed against barrier poles and veered into the river.

The driver drowned, while a male passenger was saved from the river, but later died in the ambulance.

Two other women and another man survived the ordeal.

Divers recovered the driver’s body and the vehicle.

In a separate incident on the same day, another car landed up in a water ditch about 23km from Bethal on the Middelburg road. No one was seriously injured in this incident.
