2 suspects arrested for arson at UKZN Westville campus
During the investigation, it was revealed that the two suspects are not students at the campus.
Two suspects have been arrested for arson at the oval residence at University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Westville campus.
According to UKZN’s acting executive director of corporate relations, Normah Zondo, more arrests, linked to the torching of the building, are expected. The building was set alight on Sunday, 11 October.
“Investigators said the two, currently unregistered, students, aged 24 and 25, are facing trespassing, arson and attempted murder charges,” said Zondo.
The building that was set alight will be closed due to severe health and safety regulation breaches. Zondo noted the university is currently dealing with the issue and was grateful no one was injured during the fire.
Vice-chancellor and principal, professor Nana Poku said the arrests should sound a warning to criminals masquerading as students at its campuses.
“Such individuals have no place in our modern society, let alone on our university campuses. The university community stands as one in condemnation of this senseless, criminal act,” said Poku.
