3 arrested with stolen railway lines in Randfontein

Three men aged 31, 36 and 43 were arrested for being in possession of stolen railway lines on Friday, 13 November.

This follows an intelligence-driven operation by the West Rand District Police’s crime intelligence unit, Randfontein Herald reports.

According to Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye, West Rand District Police spokesperson, the three suspects, who were employed by one of the scrap yards in Randfontein, went to collect the railway lines at a scrap yard in Bekkersdal.

The police followed them until the suspects got inside and then they arrested them.

She added that a truck plus 50 metres of railway lines to the value of R150 000 were confiscated.

All three suspects will be appearing in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on charges of possession of essential infrastructure, and failing to comply with the Second-Hand Goods Act 6 of 2009.

Brigadier Marinda Theron, the Carletonville Police station commander, applauded the members for their hard work and warned community members against tampering with and damaging essential infrastructure as it leads to many commuters being stranded, train collisions and derailing.

The police are appealing to community members to report any criminal activities to the nearest Police Station.

They can call the Crime Stop number on 080 010111 or SMS 32211.
