400kg Corrie Le Grange discharged from ICU
Corrie Le Grange – the 400kg man from Edenvale on the East Rand who was hospitalised last week – has been discharged from ICU at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
Le Grange was discharged on Tuesday after being admitted there following a diagnosis of double pneumonia, the infection of both lungs, Bedfordview Edenvale News reported.
The 60-year-old man admitted to the Johannesburg hospital after a number of private medical institutions refused to take him in because he did not have the required R100 000 for treatment.
He was initially diagnosed with ascites, whose symptoms include abdominal swelling, edema – swelling of the feet – a serious skin condition and severe water retention.
“Corrie is out of ICU and he is receiving the treatment he needs,” said his fiancée, Shammy Rademeyer.
According to Porter, Le Grange is now eating on his own. The doctors requested that he moves as much as possible, as it helps with the recovery process.
“The ICU caregivers have been great, providing the best possible treatment and keeping the family informed of all developments, at all hours. He’s made good progress against his infections,” he said.
Le Grange’s home bed has been removed. The doctors also asked for his couch to be brought to the hospital so that he could change positions.
Le Grange’s family later expressed disappointment after journalists “overstepped ethical boundaries”.
According to family spokesperson Mark Porter, the family found out that some journalists had impersonated family members to get access to information from the nurses and doctors.
