5 dead in Mpumalanga head-on collision
Two people were certified dead on the scene and three others later died in hospital after two vehicles collided on the D2948 Road between Tonga and Mangweni in Mpumalanga.
It was believed a vehicle tried to overtake another when it collided with a light delivery vehicle.
Mpumalanga community safety, security and liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe called for increased alertness on the part of drivers in order to reduce deaths and injuries resulting from road crashes.
“We will not hesitate to arrest motorists who do not comply with the rules of the road. We will make sure that they pay the price and this will send a message to other motorists,” said Shongwe.
He further urged communities and users of public transport to report any act of bad driving to the authorities to avoid large number of fatalities caused by vehicle collisions during the festive season.
Shongwe said head-on collisions can be avoided are drivers are always alert when they are behind the steering wheel.
In a separate incident last month, two people died and five were left critically injured in a head-on collision along the N2 highway near the Mpoza off-ramp in KwaZulu-Natal.
On arrival, Netcare 911 and other emergency services found victims still trapped in the wreckage.
The cause of the accident was unknown.
