5 Gauteng traffic wardens shot during Daveyton patrol
Suspects, armed with an AK-47 and a pistol, fled the scene after opening fire and injuring traffic wardens near Daveyton station.
Five Gauteng traffic wardens are recovering in hospital after they were shot at during a routine patrol near the Daveyton railway station in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Benoni City Times reports that, according to Daveyton SAPS spokesperson Constable Ntando Ngomane, the wardens spotted approximately 12 men.
When they stopped and attempted to search the group, it is alleged that one of the suspects fled and began firing at the wardens.
The suspects reportedly used an AK-47 rifle and a pistol.
“Members from the Client Service Centre then received a complaint from one of the GTW members requesting backup. In a swift response, officers arrived at the scene, but the suspects had already fled,” says Ngomane.
The injured wardens were transported to hospital for medical treatment.
Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
