8 shootings spark concern as man gunned down in Calcutta

A man was fatally shot in Mpumalanga, becoming the latest victim in an area that recorded multiple murders in May alone.

A 21-year-old man has become the latest victim to be gunned down in Marite, under the Calcutta policing precinct, reports Lowvelder.

The police received information about a shooting incident near a business called Why Not at 22:00 on Friday (June 12).

When the police arrived at the scene, they found a white Toyota Avanza bearing Mpumalanga registration plates.

“The back passenger door was widely opened, and a man was found lying on his back in the driver’s seat, showing no signs of life,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane.

“Five projectiles and eight spent 9mm cartridges were found inside the vehicle. The victim had four bullet wounds in the back of his head,” added Ndubane.

The victim, Melusi Zitha, was positively identified by his father, Reginald Zitha.

No arrests have been made in connection with the murder, and police investigations are ongoing

The MEC for community safety, security, and liaison Jackie Macie and Mpumalanga acting police commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned the ongoing gun murders in Mkhuhlu and its surrounding areas.

The Calcutta policing precinct has experienced eight gun-related murders in the month of May alone.

Mkhwanazi and Macie have acknowledged, after the release of the fourth quarter crime statistics on June 8, that the Calcutta policing precinct was extremely problematic due to the persistent gun violence in the area.
