Alleged unlicensed teenager hits pedestrian

A pedestrian hit by an alleged underage driver continues on the path to recovery following the ordeal.

The teenager, believed to be 17 by witnesses, had been driving on Luthuli Street in Lynnville, Mpumalanga, on Saturday at about 10am, Witbank News reported.

It is believed the teenage boy had been driving at a high speed and hit pedestrian Morris Mokweng, who sustained injuries to both his legs. Mokweng was taken to the Witbank Hospital by ambulance.

Witnesses said the teenager took the car for a carwash on Zulu Street in the same area and embarked on errands when he hit Mokweng. The boy allegedly first hit iron bars before hitting Mokweng.

Police came to the scene, and statements were taken from the crying teenager, who was sitting on the road. Police reported the teenager was arrested and charged with driving without a licence.

This after a 17-year-old taxi driver allegedly crashed into a house on Lydia Road in Kempton Park in May.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said 10 children and two adults were injured after the taxi left the road, drove through a wall and crashed into the house.

“When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found that a taxi had driven through a residence wall and came to rest against the house,” said Meiring.

“Twelve people had been inside the taxi in the collision, 10 of them children aged between 4 and 12. Paramedics assessed the patients and found that all 12 occupants had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.”
