Armed men invade family’s home

A man continues to recover, while his family has been left traumatised, after armed men stormed their Heidelberg home in Gauteng.

Fausto Tagliaferri had heard his wife Magda screaming at the washing line where she was about to hang clothes last week, Heidelberg Nigel Heraut reported.

As he rushed to his wife, Tagliaferri was overpowered by three armed men at the kitchen door, who struck him over the head with a firearm. The blow left him stunned and unable to move.

The intruders then proceeded to bind their hands, along with their 11-year-old daughter.

While holding a weapon to their daughter’s head, the robbers demanded cash and other valuables.

“I feared they would kill my daughter unless I complied. There was nothing my husband could do, as he was lying on the floor with his head covered in blood,” Magda said.

The robbers then grabbed two cellphones and a laptop and attempted to flee in a white BMW that was parked in front of the house.

Nigel police spokesperson Warrant Officer Madeleine von Wielligh said that in an attempt to stall the robbers, one of the neighbours rammed his Mitsubishi Pajero into the getaway vehicle.

“One of the robbers fired two shots into the Pajero’s driver door, missing the neighbour by centimetres. He jumped out and ran back to his house as they fled the scene,” said Von Wielligh said.

A case of aggravated robbery and theft has been opened. No arrests have been made.

Last week, two armed suspects allegedly robbed a family while they were praying at their home in the Vorna Valley area of Midrand, Gauteng.

The duo took wedding rings, cellphones, a TV set and two sets of car keys before fleeing in a silver Mercedes Benz.

The items stolen from the family are said to be worth about R80 000.

Investigations are ongoing.
