Bank scams: Have you been a victim? Let us know!

Think you can spot a scam? Even a seasoned investigative journalist got fooled by sophisticated fraudsters. Read her story and help expose these criminals.

Sophisticated banking scams are proving a challenge when discerning fact from fraud. Investigative journalist Irma Green can testify to this when she was recently duped by a fraudster. Have you been targeted recently? Share your experience and join the fight against financial crime.

Highly organised fraudsters

As a seasoned investigative journalist, my scam radar is always on high alert. Having read and written about it, I never thought I would fall prey to criminals who steal people’s money.

However, the fraudsters who targeted me were highly organised and had several tools that made them seem legit, so even though I thought I would be able to spot a scam a mile away, I was deceived.

Professional assistance raises no suspicions

In my case, the person who phoned me presented herself as a member of my bank’s fraud department, alerting me to suspicious transactions on my account.

The conversation took place on my car’s speakerphone, with a senior journalist colleague listening in on the process. Not once were we sceptical or suspicious of the ‘professional individual from the bank’ who posed as someone offering help, not heartache.
