Police have issued safety tips for people exercising in the morning during the lockdown.
Since the start of lockdown level 4, people are allowed to exercise between 06:00 and 09:00 in the morning.
Several people have fallen victim to criminals preying on them while jogging and cycling, robbing them of their belongings.
In Centurion, recently several victims were robbed of cellphones, running shoes, bicycles, clothes and jewellery.
Here are some tips from the police:
– Pay attention to your surroundings.
– Don’t be distracted by your phone.
– Exercise in familiar areas, and avoid secluded places.
– Change up your route and training time. It will make it difficult for any would-be criminal to anticipate your movements.
– Carry your cellphone if possible so that you are able to call for help in case of an emergency.
– Ensure someone you trust knows you are headed out for a run or cycle and has an idea of the route you plan to take and when you should be returning.
– If you have children with you, keep a close eye on them and teach them about stranger danger.
– Wear reflective clothing to make sure you are visible.
– It is always better to walk, run or cycle with a friend.
– Ensure you maintain the correct social distance at all times and wear a mask.
