CIT robbers chase ends with arrests in Hartbeespoort

The case has been transferred to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation for further investigation.

Five more suspects were arrested in Kroondal earlier on Wednesday after a chase ensued between the police and the robbers, Kormorant reports.

“A multi-disciplinary police task team, comprising of Crime Intelligence, tracking teams, SAPS Airwing and Magma Investigations traced suspects that are allegedly linked to CIT robberies, to a safe house in Kroondal, and upon realising that they were cornered by the police, the suspects fled in four vehicles,” said national police spokesperson, Colonel Brenda Muridili.

The police task team gave chase and managed to stop and arrest five suspects near Kroondal. Three suspects got away and a car chase towards Hartbeespoort ensued where police were waiting.

The three suspects were then arrested at the Damdoryn crossing.

“During the arrest, the police seized four vehicles; two sedans, an SUV and a minibus, as well as an assault rifle and ammunition. The team is tracing more suspects that managed to get away.

The suspects are aged between 33 and 42.

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla John Sitole has commended the multi-disciplinary team responsible for the arrests of the eight suspects linked to cash-in-transit robberies before they could commit a crime.

The suspects will possibly face charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles.

The case has been transferred to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation for further investigation.
