Clean-up on hydrocarbon spill in Mossel Bay progresses
Following a high level investigation by joint authorities into the Bayview hydrocarbon spill, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.
Last week representatives of the Breede-Gouritz Catchment Management Agency (BGCMA), the municipality, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, and the Department of Environment, Forestry & Fisheries: Oceans and Coasts Compliance attended the site inspection at the Transnet freight rail facility.
The inspection and investigation were led by Advocate Tandiswa Jacobs, deputy director at DEFF: Oceans and Coast.
Last week, the Mossel Bay Advertiser reported that senior executives from Transnet Freight Rail acknowledged the situation required urgent action.
This week, work started on emptying of the effluent plant. “So far we have managed to remove the effluent. We are now working on removing the sludge,” reported Ezekiel Monyamane, senior manager, Environmental Management and Sustainability at Transnet.
Monyamane said a report with before and after pictures, within agreed timelines, will be presented to mark the progress.
