Covid-19: Rapid rise in cases a cause for concern

With the number of Covid-19 cases increasing rapidly, calls have been made for citizens to take all relevant precautions to keep themselves safe.

South Africa is currently riding the tsunami of the third-wave of Covid-19 infections.

The number of infected individuals has risen sharply this week, with Gauteng the epicentre of the third wave. This week alone, the number of people who have been infected with the Covid-19 virus has reached 1 899 143, with total deaths reaching 59 406, and the recovery rate dipping below the 90% mark.

But it is not all bad news; 1 675 827 people have recovered from their initial illness, and 2 550 248 people have now been vaccinated. While the vaccination roll-out has been slower than some had hoped for, Gauteng Premier David Makhura confirmed that the province would soon start vaccinating law enforcement officials, and those aged between 50 and 59.

The process of vaccinating the country’s educators has also begun.

Government has emphasised that anyone over the age of 60 may visit vaccination sites, whether or not they have previously registered on the electronic vaccination data system, and they will receive their jab.
