Cutting-edge nuclear medicine centre opens in Sandton
Dr Thabo Lengaga and his team believe nuclear medicine plays a vital role in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of critical diseases such as cancer.
The Centre of Molecular Imaging and Theragnostic Therapy (CoMIT) has opened its doors in Rivonia, Sandton bringing the latest in nuclear medicine technology to South Africa.
Dr Thabo Lengana explained that nuclear medicine is an important field at the cutting edge of diagnostic and theranostic treatment of cancers and other critical diseases.
“We can now offer molecular imaging for any system in the body that needs to be assessed for functionality,” said Dr Lengana.
He and his team believe nuclear medicine plays a vital role in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of critical diseases such as cancer.

“It’s so critical that we are able to give people access to the kind of imaging modality that really aids in the management of their illness.”
CoMIT is a full-suite medicine centre offering the full suite of diagnostic and theranostic services including the latest in PET technology with all the known traces from FDG [fluorodeoxyglucose] up to prostate cancer imaging.

CoMIT is the first centre in Gauteng to offer the five-ring PET-CT [positron emission tomography and computed tomography scans done at the same time with the same machine] and other technological advances including motion-free PET and other Q-clear technology, which offers the best sensitivity available.
Dr Lengana partnered with GE Healthcare to bring the dream to fruition.
“We knew they would be the perfect team to help us fulfil our vision of creating a ‘beacon’ for Africa – a centre that will bring the best service, newest therapies and latest technologies together in a space that feels more like home and less like a clinic.”
General manager of GE Healthcare SSA Eyong Ebai said, “Opening a centre of this scale is challenging at the best of times, let alone in the midst of a global pandemic. That’s where our teams were able to assist the partners with our global equipment as well as its installation, all within the limitations that Covid presented.”
