‘Diabolical’ Umlazi shooting is unjustifiable: Mchunu

Four of five men who were shot by armed suspects have died over the weekend in Umlazi’s P Section in KwaZulu-Natal.

Five men were at their residence in Umlazi when a group of gunmen stormed the house and allegedly fired shots at the victims, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

It is believed three of the men who were shot died on the scene. The remaining two victims were transported to hospital, where one of them succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The motive of the attack has not been established and remains a subject of police investigations. The Umlazi police are investigating four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

In response to the manslaughter, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu said: “We strongly condemn these callous murders. These diabolical deeds are extremely shocking, objectionable and unjustifiable, and we shall monitor the cases until there are arrests and convictions. I am extremely taken aback that four people have been murdered in such a cruel manner.”

“I have, however, been assured that members of the police are working round the clock to ensure that those who are responsible for these callous murders are brought to justice as soon as possible,” Mchunu added.

In February, a man was shot and killed in front of his family at his home in Linden, Johannesburg.

Andre Fabricius, a former police officer, and his family were allegedly attacked by three men armed with a gun and axes. He was reportedly shot in the heart while his wife and 13-year-old son were tied up in the house.
