Double life imprisonment for rape and murder

The Durban High Court has convicted and sentenced a 22-year old man for rape, murder and robbery.

Thulani Mlungisi Khanyile was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, life imprisonment for murder and 20 years for robbery, police said.

The murder victim, Delyn Louw (18) was in K Section in KwaMasshu when he was attacked by the accused on October 27, 2013.

Louw was robbed of his cellphone and takkies before he was stabbed to death.

A woman who was with Louw was robbed of her wrist watch and taken to a nearby vacant house where she was raped, police said.

A case of rape, murder and robbery was opened at the KwaMashu police station and through investigation, a cellphone was recovered that led to Khanyile’s arrest.

KwaZulu-Natal police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “This shows our commitment and dedication in [fighting] crimes against women and children. We welcome the heavy sentence handed down to the accused as we are campaigning for 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children”.

Ngobeni added that victims of abuse, especially women and children, should break the silence and report any kind of abuse to the police.

In a separate incident, a 35-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man was convicted and handed three life imprisonment sentences after he raped three victims, one of whom was mentally disabled.

Thamsanqa Ndlovu had raped two victims on separate occasions in the Umbumbulu area in December 2013.

The third victim had allegedly been raped during a period from April 2013 to November 2013.
