Dros rapist to face an additional charge
Nicholas Ninow was caught with a cellphone in his possession at the Baviaanspoort correctional centre where he is serving a life sentence for the rape of a seven-year-old girl.
Convicted rapist Nicolas Ninow will face additional charges after he was caught in possession of a cellphone inside the Baviaanspoort correctional facility where he is being kept.
Ninow is serving a life sentence for the rape of a seven-year-old girl at a Dros restaurant in 2018.
The Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said an investigation was underway to determine how the phone was smuggled into the facility and what other role players were involved.
He said cellphones were amongst the items classified as contraband and inmates knew that such gadgets were not permitted inside correctional facilities.
“Regrettably, offender Nicholas Ninow was caught with a cellphone in his possession,” he said.
“This is a disturbing development as the Department of Correctional Services is working towards having contraband-free facilities.
“Offender Ninow has been charged in terms of section 23(1) of the correctional services act, act 111 of 1998.”
Nxumalo said Ninow would be reprimanded accordingly, a process which may involve the withdrawal of privileges for a specified period, reclassification (downgrade) and other punitive measures.
“The confiscated cellphone will be taken for digital forensics.”
