Durban beachfront security finds deceased newborn

Police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a baby was found on the sand on a Durban beach.

Police are appealing for information after a newborn baby was found dead, partially covered by sand on a Durban beach, yesterday (August 23).

Berea Mail reports that Durban Metro Police officers were alerted to the discovery.

Durban Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said: “At about 09:20 on Sunday, Durban Metro Police Service members were conducting patrols along the [lower marine parade] near Addington Hospital. Members were approached by security personnel, who reported that a newborn baby had been found lying on the beach sand opposite Addington Oncology.

Members attended the scene and found a newborn male baby lying partially covered by sand. “It appeared that the baby may have been buried in the sand and was later exposed by the wind. A paramedic from Addington Hospital attended the scene and confirmed that the baby was deceased.”

Captain Carmen Rhynes, the SAPS eThekwini District spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said an inquest docket was opened and is being investigated by Point detectives.

Durban Metro Police urges anyone with information that may assist the investigation to report it to SAPS.
