E-hailing drivers embark on ‘peaceful’ protest until Thursday
Safety concerns and ‘unfair’ treatment has prompted e-hailing drivers to ground their vehicles.
E-hailing drivers will not be collecting passengers for the next three days, as they peacefully protest their working conditions.
An action group representing several e-hailing services met with government officials to discuss the protest and assured it will be peaceful.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Jacob Mamabolo and officials from the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport met with the drivers’ group, Unity in Diversity (UID), on Monday.
“The parties had a productive meeting in which it was resolved that UID will proceed with the planned protest action on March 22, subject to increased security measures and strict adherence to a safe and non-violent protest,” a joint statement by the two parties said on Tuesday.
The Citizen reported that e-hailing drivers from Uber, Bolt, Didi and InDriver are participating in the protest.
Bolt and Uber drivers are demanding better pay in the light of rising fuel prices, added safety measures and an end to exploitation.
Drivers have claimed that passengers are refunded without proper investigation, and that the refunded money is deducted from their income. They also claim to be in constant danger of being robbed of their belongings by criminals posing as passengers.
UID assured Mamabolo that the protest will remain peaceful. They have committed to prioritising safety and security by deploying additional marshals.
