Eighteen stolen sheep found inside Toyota Quantum; 77 recovered in total

Eighteen stolen sheep were found squeezed into a Toyota Quantum while the driver and passengers ran away.

The Hekpoort Police are investigating a case of stock theft after sheep was stolen from a farm in Hekpoort West at about 04:30 on Wednesday, September 15.

Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye from the West Rand Police’s corporate communications said stock theft is not just another property theft issue.

Even small numbers of livestock represent the livelihood of a family and their means to sustain themselves; thus the police view stock theft cases as very serious.”

She said when Warrant Officer Gert Schultz and Sergeant Johan van der Berg from the Hekpoort Police received information about the stolen livestock they responded swiftly.

While they were driving along Bekker Road, they came across a white Toyota Quantum. When the members made a U-turn the Quantum pulled over and stopped.

Seventy seven of the stolen sheep were eventually recovered. Photo submitted.

“The driver and two passengers came out of the Quantum and ran into the veld. The members found 18 sheep inside the Quantum.”

The two members ran after the suspects and found another 41 sheep next to a lodge in the area, as well as another 18 outside a kraal. Police were able to recover 77 of the 83 sheep that were stolen, and their owner identified them by their tags.

Police are appealing to the community to assist with any information that could lead to apprehending the suspects. Sergeant Maswanganye added that the acting Hekpoort Police station commander, Warrant Officer Jannie Brits applauded the members for their swift response, and commended the public for their dedication and commitment to reducing crime in the Hekpoort area.
