Eskom reduces load-shedding after receiving diesel supply

A consignment of diesel by PetroSA has enabled the power utility to reduce peak-hour power cuts.

Eskom announced that load-shedding will be reduced from stage 4 to stage 3 during peak hours and at night after it received diesel from PetroSA to replenish its emergency generation reserves.

Yesterday, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordan said that PetroSA has 50m litres of diesel available for Eskom. The cost of the diesel or where the money will come from is yet to be determined after Eskom announced that it has overspent its diesel budget and has no more funds available to buy fuel.

The power utility said that stage 3 load-shedding will be implemented from 16:00 to 05:00 daily, with stage 2 load-shedding from 05:00 to 16:00.

High levels of breakdowns and limited emergency reserves are the main reasons for the ongoing load-shedding.

Currently, seven units at various power stations are offline for repairs. Three units at Kusile Power Station have been offline since October and will remain offline for the next few months, while the chimney system is repaired. Koeberg unit 1 is currently operating at a reduced level in preparation for being taken offline for refuelling and maintenance in December.
