Fake death certificate leads to arrest of KZN mom
Authorities allege she used a fraudulent death certificate to secure an R8 000 insurance pay-out before the scheme was uncovered.
A 37-year-old woman from Ndwedwe in KZN was arrested this week after allegedly falsely reporting the death of her 15-year-old child in order to claim insurance money, reports North Coast Courier.
According to iLembe SAPS spokesperson Priya Nunkumar, the woman visited the Ndwedwe Department of Home Affairs in April, where she obtained a death certificate for the child.
She allegedly used the certificate to claim an R8 000 insurance payout from her bank.
The woman later returned to Home Affairs to complain that her South African Social Security Agency child support grant had been suspended.
“Ndwedwe Home Affairs conducted an inquiry and discovered that the same woman had fraudulently reported her child as deceased and applied for a death certificate. A fraud case was opened at Ndwedwe SAPS, and the suspect was arrested,” said Nunkumar.
