Eldorado Park father faces murder, rape charges after girl (4) dies

The girl passed away in the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital and her mother has also since been criminally charged.

Charges against a Soweto father have been escalated from child abuse to murder and rape. The change comes after his four-year-old daughter, who was rescued from a shack in Eldorado Park earlier this week, died in the hospital.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said police acted on a complaint of abuse and discovered the girl lying in a bed with injuries her father could not explain.

They included head injuries and bruises and she was rushed to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital on Wednesday (August 6).

Her father was initially charged with attempted murder and child abuse before his daughter’s death in hospital yesterday. Masondo confirmed that the charges have now been amended to murder and rape.

The girl’s mother has also since been arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice.

Both parents appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The father applied for bail and the matter was postponed until next week Tuesday (August 12).
