Four die in mine accident near Carletonville

The accident occurred when a mud wall collapsed at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu mine.

Four workers at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu mine died in an accident at the mine over the weekend.

According to the company’s spokesperson, Sihle Maake, the workers lost their lives following an infrastructure maintenance-related incident on Saturday, 7 May.

“Their families and relevant authorities were immediately informed, and the affected area has been closed, pending an in-loco investigation,” says Maake.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident. At Harmony, we view our employees as part of the larger family. Our priority is now to support the families of the deceased and everyone affected by this tragedy”, says Peter Steenkamp, chief executive officer of Harmony.

The Citizen reported that two Harmony Gold workers at Kusasalethu mine was killed last year October after a seismic event that caused a ground fall.  In March, a miner was killed in a mine-related car incident at Harmony Gold’s Doornkop mine in Johannesburg.
