Gauteng remains the country’s Covid-19 hot spot, as cases surpass 160 000 mark

This is although the province, on Monday recorded a low number of about 2 000 new cases.

Gauteng remained the country’s Covid-19 hot spot, as positive cases continued to climb and were standing at 162 319 on Monday.

For several weeks, the province has recorded a high number of Covid-19 cases, with Johannesburg cases continuing to surge and stood at 68 220 and 44 379 recoveries recorded thus far, according to figures from the health department.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Gauteng stood at 162 319 and 1 625 deaths as of Monday.

The department of health said on Tuesday, out of 72 179 contacts traced (individuals who were in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19), 52 111 people have completed the 14 days monitoring period, with no symptoms, reported and were de-isolated.

The department said 5 511 people were currently hospitalised in public and private facilities.

Breakdown per district of cases and recoveries:

  • Johannesburg: 68 220 cases and 44 379 recoveries
  • Ekurhuleni: 36 297 and 27 117 recoveries
  • Tshwane: 31 394 cases and 14 981 recoveries
  • Sedibeng: 10 307 cases and 3 750 recoveries
  • West Rand: 10 728 cases and 7 007 recoveries

  • Mogale City: 5 602 cases;
  • Rand West City: 2 726 cases;
  • Merafong City: 2 309 cases;
  • And 91 unallocated cases.

On the repeated areas in the stats, the department has not yet clarified on why these suburbs were mentioned more than once.
